Tobacco Free Curriculum Available for Youth

According to the Indiana State Department of Health, three out of every ten Hoosier youth are exposed to secondhand smoke at home. Even more are exposed to secondhand smoke while riding in vehicles. Secondhand smoke exposure among young children has been associated with more frequent ear infections, lower respiratory diseases like bronchitis and pneumonia, and more frequent and severe asthma attacks.

"Getting a Head Start on Living Tobacco Free" is a curriculum designed for those who work with young children, as well as their parents and other caregivers. It can be offered in one or more modules and tailored to the needs of the center and staff. Chances And Services for Youth offers this curriculum and other resources for those who want to encourage healthier environments for young children.

Programs receive grants to make facility improvements
Early Learning Indiana provided grants to local programs for facility improvements.  The grant is a part of ELI’s Partnerships for Early Learners quality improvement efforts, which seeks to increase the number of high-quality early learning programs in Indiana.  Through the facility improvement, programs will be able to pursue becoming a Voluntary Certification Program (VCP) which will allow them to participate in Paths to QUALITY™.
