| Calling our ZooBoo Crew! |

ZooBoo
presented by Central Indiana Honda Dealers
Oct. 5-8, 12-15, 19-22, 26-29 • 2-7pm
Discover all the wild, new ways to celebrate fall — from spooktacular activities to amazing animals and pumpkins galore! ZooBoo presented by Central Indiana Honda Dealers is bigger than ever before, with additional days and the all-new experience of Pumpkin Town presented by Macy's inside the Bicentennial Pavilion.
There will be a mirror maze inside the Candy Corn Factory presented by Metro PCS and cute critters in Jack's Barn! You'll encounter a friendly witch and get crafty at Pumpkin School. There will be music, dancing and everyone's favorite Pumpkin Bowling presented by Universal Windows Direct. Plus, there's more Halloween fun to discover throughout the Zoo! Read more ...
Remember: For the safety of all guests, masks and full makeup are only allowed for children ages 12 and under.
Let's talk candy
Allergy-friendly snacks are available and we proudly only provide items that are palm-oil free, contain certified sustainable palm oil or are produced by a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO),
which is working to make orangutan-friendly palm oil products readily available.
The choices you make can impact the lives of wild orangutans. Palm oil is in high demand these days, causing the destruction of the rainforests orangutans and many other animals call home. Fortunately, there are efforts underway to encourage sustainable growing practices, and you can help! You have power as a consumer!
Buy responsibly: Palm oil is in hundreds of everyday items, and choosing products that contain certified sustainable palm oil sends a message to companies around the globe that these efforts matter!
The Indianapolis Zoo is committed to promoting the production of sustainable palm oil to help keep orangutan habitats safe and the local economy stable. Use this list as a guide when purchasing your candy this Halloween. Thanks for helping us in this important effort! |

| I wonder ... |
 |
| |
Closer than you might think. When scientists sequenced the genome of an Amur tiger, they discovered that it shared 96 percent of its genes with the domesticated house cat. If they are genetically so wild, how did cats end up domesticated at all? Recent DNA testing of ancient cats suggests that it was all the cat's idea (isn't it always?). Unlike dogs, which humans domesticated intentionally to do specific jobs, it seems that wild cats likely followed the rodents to early human settlements and decided to stick around. Since that time, the cat's genetics have changed very little. Your tabby still has a lot of tiger in him — but, unlike a tiger, he is a good addition to your household.
What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

| Thank you, Duke Energy! |
 |
|
The Zoo would like to recognize and thank Duke Energy for their generous funding that will allow us to host hundreds of students from five different underserved counties in Indiana. The students will attend educational programs led by Zoo staff, as well as explore the Zoo as a part of a field trip experience. Over the past year we have been working with the teachers to prepare for their students' visits, including participation in Zoo-led professional development. Thank you, Duke Energy, for your support of the Zoo and the community! |

| Fall bulbs for spring bloom |
|
This is the right time to get going on planting your spring blooming bulbs! Planting bulbs in the fall is an easy way for you to create an extra spectacular flower display next spring through early summer. There are a variety of bulbs to plant in the fall that will look quite good for you year after year. You can also choose reliable perennial spring bulbs for smaller plants. Even those can give you a great show when planted in masses. Here is a list of bulbs that we have had good luck with over the years in the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. Read more ... |

| Double Secret contest |
Every month, we hide a little surprise in our eNews. In the September issue, we looked for a very well-dressed bird! Did you find the penguins?
For this month's Double Secret contest, we're looking for a man who soared above the field last year. In saving species, he was tops! He has been credited with bringing multiple species back from the brink of extinction. You can say he's a "Prized" friend of the Indianapolis Zoo (and animals!). Can you find this conservation pioneer? If you're one of the first five members to email us with the double secret answer, you'll win a special Zoo prize pack!
Congratulations to last month's winners: Kathryn E., Indianapolis; Lynette G., Indianapolis; Elizabeth T., Plainfield; Elana F., Carmel; Shannon W., Elwood; and our wild card winner, Dianah B., Lebanon. |
