Lion Awareness Day
presented by MainSource Bank
Aug. 5 • 10am-2pm
You're invited to show your pride, along with our pride, as we celebrate Lion Awareness Day!
Just as wild lions work together for their survival, lions at the Zoo work with keepers to ensure that they’re in good health. Join us for a special Lion Chat to get a close-up look at this keeper-lion relationship. Lion Chats take place at the lion exhibit at 11:30am and 1pm. The "mane" event will include complimentary lion face painting and special prizes, all while guests hear about the importance of lion conservation. Read more ... |

I wonder ... |

You might know that clownfish are able to snuggle into a sea anemone's tentacles without feeling the sting. But how? The clownfish is covered in a layer of mucus that protects them from the anemone's sting. Among the 20+ species of clownfish, some are born with this protection (called innate immunity) and some build it up by rubbing their bodies on the anemone's tentacles until the sting doesn't affect them anymore (called acquired immunity).
What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

In the know |

The last time most members saw Magnificent Macaws presented by Central Indiana Honda Dealers they were wowed by the Racers, Pacers or Pit Crew flock as these beautiful birds soared through the sky and over your heads.
Now, meet some new faces that will be appearing regularly. On your next visit, you might get the chance to interact with one of our trumpeter hornbills, Peggy Sue and Sanibel. This type of hornbill is notable for the large casque (bump) on its beak. Also making appearances will be Ninkasi, a toco toucan, the largest member of the toucan family.
Hope to meet you soon in the Bicentennial Pavilion to see these exciting new birds in the ever-changing Magnificent Macaws presentation!

P.S. Did you see your Zoo made the Condé Nast Traveler list of Top Ten Zoos in the U.S.? Check it out! |

What's Growing On |
A Celebration of Salvias!
Chances are you have used salvias in your garden or have admired them in a planting of your neighbor's, at a public garden, or in the wild. Beauty, utility, variety, toughness and a propensity to attract hummingbirds make them wonderful to use as ornamentals in a cultivated planting. Read more ... |
