I wonder ... |
 |
|
With a head almost six feet from their heart, giraffes are fighting gravity to get blood to their brain. A strong heart pumps blood at high pressure through blood vessels with extra-thick walls. But giraffes still face the challenge of rapidly changing pressure when they lower their head to drink and raise it again. This is handled by a change in the path that blood takes: when a giraffe lowers its head, valves in the neck close to keep the blood from rushing in. When it raises its head, the valves open and the capillaries in the neck are able to release that blood back to the brain, preventing the giraffe from fainting.
What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

In the know |
Ever walk through Forests— waving to gibbons Elliot, Koko and Kopi as you pass by — and catch a glimpse of what appears to be a very large reptile in the stream bed south of the path? I know I have, and my heart races a little every time!
If you look a little closer you'll see that the reptile is a statue, not flesh and bone, and there are coins and a little sign nearby. That statute is an opportunity for members, guests and staff to support the work of the Indianapolis chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers. Via this "Make a Wish for Wildlife" feature, and events through the year, such as Bowling for Rhinos and Tailgating for Tigers, our keepers go beyond daily care of animals to saving species. Check them out on Facebook or their website, and toss a few coins their way the next time you're walking through Forests.
See you at the Zoo!

P.S. Thanks to everyone who voted in the Shutterbug Challenge! The people have spoken, and the winner is ... well, the winner will be revealed in the Spring+Summer issue of the Indianapolis Zoo Magazine, which will be arriving in homes in early March! Keep an eye on your mailbox to find out which photo was chosen to be the centerfold.

What's Growing On |
 |
|
The farm in the Zoo's backyard
Do you know that the White River Gardens has an agrarian theme? Once you start to look, you'll discover references to farm life both inside and out. Look at the shapes of the building: the Bud Schaefer Rotunda looks like a grain silo; the Hulman Riverhouse mimics a riverfront warehouse; the Hilbert Conservatory is shaped like a huge Indiana barn. And the wonderful 360-degree mural in the Rotunda, called Midwest Panorama, strikingly depicts Indiana's four seasons of farm life. (See if you can find the artist's name on a seed packet!) Read more ...
Remember: The Hulman Riverhouse and Hilbert Conservatory will be closed in the month of January for maintenance. |

Double Secret contest |
Every month, we hide a little surprise in our eNews. In the January issue, a lionfish was our inspiration, and those who found it came up with awesome mash-up animal names for the creatures of their dreams! Thanks to Jana S. for sending us Chase's drawing of his magnificent flying, swimming parrotfish. A little surprise is headed your way!
This month, the game's afoot (or is it aflutter?)! There'll be many wings around the Zoo and Gardens this year, but these will be among the first to arrive. Can you find this flying favorite?
Congratulations to last month's winners: Rosemary L., Indianapolis; Lilly V.H., Indianapolis; Jason M.L., Fishers; Ryan B., Indianapolis; Kellie R., Fishers; and our wild card winner, Laura W., Indianapolis. |
