I wonder ...
I wonder... how does a lizard drop and regrow its tail?
Lizards like the blue-tongued skink can drop their tails when they're threatened. But how does it work? Along the tail are multiple weak points where the lizard can squeeze its muscles and the tail will detach. Nerves in the tail fire, causing it to wiggle around on the ground and draw attention away from the retreating lizard. For many animals, that would be the end of the story, but for lizards, it gets weirder: dropping their tails triggers their regeneration genes. A new tail will start to grow, often smaller than the original or a different color or texture. The whole process can take a couple of months or even years, depending on the location of the break point.

What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

In the February eNews we asked, "Who's Your Animal Sweetheart?" With all of the votes tallied, it looks like ... Max is the winner! Congratulations, little guy!

Max and his mom, Kim, now make their home in the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center where they're receiving the highest level of care from zookeepers and vet staff. We hear that MarisolMax is a fan of bananas, and Kim prefers grapes. We happy that mother and son continue to thrive in their new home.

See you at the Zoo!

Conservatory and Rotunda   The Zoo is more than a zoo

There is no question that the White River Gardens, which opened in the spring of 1999, is a beautiful botanical garden. When you visit, you'll see hundreds of plants of all shapes, sizes and colors are packed into just over three acres containing 25 different garden areas. It should come as no surprise that the White River Gardens is officially certified as a botanical garden by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).

What might be news to you is that the Zoo was accredited by AAM as a botanical garden in 1996, three years before the Gardens existed! What's that all about? Read more ...
