I wonder ...
I wonder... how do snakes shed their skin?
All animals shed their skin as they grow — even humans — but most animals lose skin cells a few at a time, so it isn't very noticeable. Snakes lose all of their old skin at once, leaving behind an inside-out tube of skin and any parasites that might have been attached to it. To do this, a snake finds a safe space to rest and begins to release a fluid between the old and new skin layers. This fluid lifts the old skin layer so that the snake can rub a hole in it on a rock or branch. Then the snake can crawl free, its new skin bright and shiny!

What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

Ready to ROAR?
In the know
I know the slightest chill in the air makes me think of vacations in warm places, and you're probably the same. I'm already planning my 2017 holidays. I'd like to invite you to journey with your Zoo family to New Orleans and Thibodaux, La., next June for a week of wildlife, adventure and good food on an affordable, expertly guided, family-friendly trip.

Thibodeaux

We're going to explore Louisiana's habitats on an exhilarating airboat ride, visit the Audubon Nature Institute, soak up the culture in the French Quarter and relax on Grand Isle and talk to Nature Conservancy staff about their conservation work in the Gulf of Mexico. We're very eager about this Marisolopportunity to take family and friends on this exciting and educational excursion.

Come enjoy the Big Easy with us! Contact Jennifer Barker at 317-630-2014 or jbarker@indyzoo.com for details and let the good times roll next summer!

Ivy and Wooden Bench   It's Not Too Late to Garden!

Fall is moving along and winter seems not so far off. But, if you are like me, there are some things you just didn't get to in your garden. Never fear! It's not too late to get out there and do quite a bit in your yard before the ground freezes and you can no longer dig in the soil.

You still have a good chance of digging and storing tender bulbs like cannas, caladiums and dahlias bulbs and tubers for the winter if you know where they are planted. Look for firm bulbs not damaged by insects. Firm roots of showy begonias can be potted up as houseplants. Read more ...

IRA charitable rollover continues
EagleIt's still here! Thanks to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015, qualified IRA owners may continue to issue distributions directly from their accounts to the Indianapolis Zoo throughout 2016 and permanently thereafter. Specifically:
  • Permits donors age 70 1/2 and older to make tax-free charitable distributions directly from their IRAs.
  • Charitable IRA rollover distributions cannot exceed $100,000 for a given tax year.
  • Applies to outright distributions only. Charitable IRA rollover distributions cannot be used to establish life income gifts such as charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts.
  • Charitable IRA rollover distributions issued by December 31, 2016 may be counted for the 2016 tax year and applied toward owners' required minimum distribution.
  • Unlike prior, temporary extensions passed by Congress, the PATH Charitable IRA Rollover extension is permanent, allowing for qualified outright distributions in future years.

For more details, please visit the Zoo's planned giving website, or contact Ed Sandifer at 317-630-2709 or esandifer@indyzoo.com. Thank you for your support of the Indianapolis Zoo and its role as a leader in animal conservation!

Double Secret contest
Carl Jones and KestrelEvery month, we hide a little surprise in our eNews. In the October issue, we were hot on the trail of an echo parakeet, a bird species saved by 2016 Indianapolis Prize Winner Carl Jones. Don't miss your chance to meet conservation heroes Prof. Jones and the Prize Finalists and get their autographs and ask awesome questions at Meet a hero on Oct. 15!

This month, the seasons are changing and we feel like giving our homes a fall cleaning. Maybe rearrange the furniture and throw out that big tube television that we've had since 1992. It just won't fit in the trashcan! That's OK, because we should all be mindful of the environment when we dispose of our electronics, right? What should we do? I think the Zoo has just the solution!

Meanwhile, that pesky old television is hiding somewhere in this issue of the eNews. If you're one of the first five members to find and click on it, then email us with the double secret answer, you'll win a special Zoo prize pack!

Congratulations to last month's winners: Gena D., Shelbyville; Jennifer S., Greenfield; Megan B., Indianapolis; Alisha W., Indianapolis; Amanda B., Crawfordsville; and our wild card winner, Kristi C., New Castle!
