Cummins CEO Jennifer Rumsey on Her Boilermaker Journey and Leading a 105-Year-Old Company Toward a Greener Future
In this episode of “This Is Purdue,” we’re talking to Jennifer Rumsey, Chair and CEO of Cummins Inc.

Jennifer discusses her experience as a Purdue mechanical engineering student and how that led her to four internships with Cummins during her Boilermaker journey. Her story is unique because few people can say they interned for a company and later became its CEO.

Hear her share the importance of leading a 105-year-old company into the future and the legacy she hopes to leave at Cummins. This includes Cummins’ Destination Zero strategy to go further, faster to reduce the greenhouse gas and air quality impacts of its products.

You’ll also hear her biggest lessons and advice for fellow women in STEM and why she believes inclusivity and representation are necessary for shaping our society for the better. Plus, Jennifer shares what it means to see her own two daughters follow in her footsteps and pursue degrees in mechanical engineering at Purdue.

Don’t miss Jennifer’s incredible story of how she climbed the ladder from intern to CEO and the role Purdue has played in her life.

Storytelling
Even the best storytellers can occasionally get stuck trying to figure out how to structure their stories. TV writer Dan Harmon (the creator of “Community” and “Rick and Morty” among other notable work) found a way to conquer this creativity block by devising a handy tool that adapts the traditional hero’s journey framework. He believes this story progression will work in virtually every case, whether it’s a TV show or movie, a written piece or even a song.

Here are the eight steps in Harmon’s story circle
  1. A character is in a zone of comfort,
  2. But they want something.
  3. They enter an unfamiliar situation,
  4. Adapt to it,
  5. Get what they wanted.
  6. Pay a heavy price for it,
  7. Then return to their familiar situation,
  8. Having changed.
As storytellers, it’s easy to get bogged down when we overthink what we want to say. Harmon’s tool creates an easy, reliable model for story structure. If you ever feel dissatisfied by the way your story is evolving, take a moment to consider whether applying this technique might help your piece flow better and reach a desirable conclusion.

Sharel Welch, Senior Communication Strategist
Sharel has a deep love for people and story, and puts those passions to use in her role as senior communication strategist for Purdue University in Indianapolis. Her creative use of communications extends to the rest of her life, too. Whether she’s acting in a play or singing in her church choir, Sharel says she loves being able to create something meaningful to share.

A proud mom of three daughters, Sharel says her favorite weekend activities include spending time with her family (which also includes her husband and shelties), visiting museums and simply enjoying the peaceful quiet in her kitchen with a cup of tea — though the reality usually has her enjoying tea on the run!

But she says peace is a state of mind more than the state of her surroundings, and aims for a life that reflects her favorite quote: “Peace: It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
