Purdue Research Series | A Look Into Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Innovations With Preeti Sivasankar
In this episode of “This Is Purdue,” we’re talking to Preeti Sivasankar, Purdue University’s vice president for research innovation and professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

Societal transformation begins with research, and no one knows this better than Preeti. Since joining Purdue’s faculty 19 years ago, she has contributed to making the department a leader in the field. Purdue is now home to the No. 2 speech-language pathology graduate program and No. 8 audiology graduate program in the country according to U.S. News & World Report. And as the newly appointed vice president for research innovation, she helps lead other Boilermaker researchers as their work continues to impact the world.

In this second episode of our 2024 Purdue Research Series, you will:
  • Learn more about Preeti’s research in voice disorders, what causes them and how we can prevent vocal strain.
  • Explore how Purdue’s Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, part of the College of Health and Human Sciences, provides students and faculty with unique research opportunities and experiences.
  • Discover how, as vice president of research innovation, Preeti’s approach to interdisciplinary research at Purdue will take our students’ and faculty’s work to the next level.
  • Find out about the mentorship that’s shaping the next generation of researchers and making a significant impact in speech, language and hearing sciences.
  • Hear her debunk common myths about saving our voices and describe what we can do to protect them.

Purdue News Weekly and Purdue News website
Purdue has launched two major communication features to deliver the latest Purdue stories to a wider audience and in a more compelling way: the new Purdue News Weekly newsletter and the expanded and redesigned Purdue News website.

Purdue News Weekly will offer a curated selection of stories that highlight the university’s research excellence, innovation, awards and honors, events and more. The newsletter will be emailed every Friday to faculty, staff and students, and friends of the university also have the chance to subscribe. Purdue News Weekly will replace the Friday edition of Purdue Today, which will continue to be sent Monday through Thursday.

The new Purdue News website will combine the previous Purdue Newsroom and Purdue Today websites into a single, dynamic location to better highlight Purdue’s news. The site will provide new content daily and will prominently feature stories on research excellence, innovation, Purdue’s strategic initiatives and student life as well providing a regular link to the “Purdue News Now” weekly video update.

Kim Witte | Multimedia Designer
Design has always been top of mind for Kim. Even in elementary school, art was her focus — she has hand-drawn cards for her parents’ birthdays and every holiday for as long as she can remember. Her interest in visual design increased while taking web design courses in college.

As a multimedia designer, Kim draws on previous work experience creating social media content, producing print pieces, and engaging with alumni and donors. She works alongside other designers on the team and contributes her expertise to user experience (UX) projects that improve Purdue’s web presence.

User experience and accessibility are important to Kim, who thinks through human-computer interaction and strives to make life better for people affected by disabilities. To unwind, she always looks forward to going to the gym, finding the latest skin care product, or spending time with her parents and her two cats.

Storytelling Tip
The Boilermaker community is incredibly diverse, with folks venturing here from every corner of the globe, from every economic circumstance and with a wide variety of subject-matter interests or worldviews. And yet Purdue has brought us all together.

Keep that universal connection in mind when communicating with our audience. As is the case when Taylor Swift engages with Swifties, George Lucas speaks with Star Wars fanatics or Disney announces new theme park attractions to its rabid fan base, there is significant brand loyalty available to leverage when addressing our community. The key is to not overdo it in a way that can come across as manipulative or phony.

Executed authentically, our university storytelling can inspire and enlighten our audience, expanding the Purdue pride that they already feel. When we identify opportunities to tell stories that emphasize our shared experiences as Boilermakers, our audience will likely be receptive.
