Weekly Newsletter

 November 2, 2020

Dear colleagues-

We’ve made it to November and it seems like we are now racing through to Thanksgiving, with the stress of our elections being our lens for the week.

Consequently, we are keeping this week’s newsletter short.

A few upcoming events in the EJ world include our 3rd Lunch and Learn with Laura Zanotti on 11/11. And our second co-sponsored film is También la Lluvia (Even the Rain). Registration for both is open now.

Today also marks the publication of our third issue of Earth Today; as you know, this is a new initiative so we encourage you to share this with your undergraduates this week. This month's departmental focus is on EEE, Environmental and Ecological Engineering.

Read on for additional opportunities and events.

Building on the Center for the Environment’s year-long program of conversations about intersections between environmental and social justice, Dr. Laura Zanotti, Center Associate Director and Professor in Anthropology, will highlight frameworks of environmental justice and ways they have been mobilized at both sites of global environmental governance and in national contexts to support Indigenous Peoples' rights. Reflecting on collaborative partnerships with Mebêngôkre-Kayapó Peoples, she will detail current threats facing Indigenous Peoples rights in Brazil and pursuits for justice. All are welcome to attend. Register here.

Environmental Justice Film Series

The film will be followed by a post-screening discussion.
The Series is Co-Sponsored by the Center for the Environment, Native American Educational and Cultural Center, The Department of Spanish and Portuguese/School of Languages and Cultures, Department of Anthropology, The Arequipa Nexus Institute JEDI Postdoctoral Working Group, & The Division of Student Life.

DOE Energy-Water Desalination Hub

November 18-19, 2020

In late 2019, Center affiliate David Warsinger participated in the DOE call for teams to support its Energy-Water Desalination Hub.  By mid-2020, Purdue became affiliated with one of the successful teams, the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI). Along with co-founding laboratories Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado, NAWI brings together a team of industry and academic partners to examine the critical technical barriers and research needed to radically lower the cost and energy of desalination.  On November 18th-19th, the NAWI team will hold its virtual annual meeting and registration is free. If you are interested in learning about this DOE project and/or the conference, please contact David directly.

Issue number 3 of Earth Today, our monthly environmental newsletter for undergrads, came out today.

As a new initiative of the Center this year, we are now providing a newsletter that brings together environmentally-focused resources and news, specifically for undergraduates at Purdue. Each issue features an academic program and a course that each emphasize environmental programs at Purdue, an active, environmentally-driven student club, and an array of events and programs on and off-campus.

Faculty are encouraged to forward the link to their students.
