Instagram Updates Profile Grid With Vertical-Aligned Thumbnails Takeaways: You may have noticed a change in your IG profile grid lately, with the thumbnail images for your posts switching to a more vertical-aligned presentation, as opposed to the regular square image display.
Above is a screenshot and link to a post to explain how the various sizes will now preview in the new layout. This post is also helpful in explaining the different ratios — ideally we'll now be uploading images and graphics that are a 4:5 ratio (1080x1350), and they will preview in grid view as 3:4.
For Purdue: This feature has been coming for some time, but it was rolled out to a lot of users very suddenly this past weekend as part of IG’s broader effort to position itself as the best alternative to TikTok. This has large implications for every account and should be a part of your content planning going forward.
Also, for those whose grids are looking a little out of whack with this update, Instagram has given you the option to adjust each post with a black or white border. This link shows how to do that. We're in luck with our brand colors, the black border is a good fix for anything previously posted! |

Ashvini Malshe, Content Writer It was in 11th grade AP English that the trajectory of Ashvini’s life shifted thanks to some heartfelt encouragement.
“My teacher told me I had a natural talent for writing, and I could do it for a living,” she says.
Now, after receiving her bachelor’s in communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and master’s in journalism from UC Berkeley, she’s a professional who’s excited to be contributing to an award-winning team at a world-class institution. She’s passionate about higher education and writing authentic and creative content with measurable impact.
In addition to her professional and academic accomplishments, she has a black belt in Taekwondo, enjoys traveling, and loves baking for family and friends. In fact, during the pandemic lockdown, she ran a bakery out of her home.
But if you wanted to get her talking, ask her anything about pop culture — in particular, she’ll happily tell you all about South Asian icons who have made tremendous contributions to music. |
