Looking Ahead: Earth Week 2021

Dear friends -

Earth Day is April 22 and there are numerous events both at Purdue and around the state of Indiana celebrating not just the Day, but Earth Week!

We've compiled a selection of Earth Week events for you below. Each event has a brief description and includes a link with more information.

In addition to these great events, keep an eye out for the Center for the Environment's Earth Week celebration next week, spotlighting our faculty affiliates' research around the world.
 
Upcoming Earth Week Events
Boiler Green Initiative: Recycling Disposable Facemasks
Ongoing initiative | Krach Main Lobby

The Boiler Green Initiative invites Boilermakers to recycle disposable masks, helping reduce waste as we tread through this pandemic. Students can drop off their used disposable masks in BGI’s TerraCycle Box, located at Krach’s main lobby each time they are in the area. All they have to do is safely collect their used masks, for example, in a dining court plastic bag before they drop it off. 
 
Indiana State Museum: Arts of the Earth Day
April 17 | Indiana State Museum



The Indiana State Museum celebrates Earth Week with its Arts of the Earth Day program, featuring artists creating various pieces and participating in on-site demonstrations. The museum will unveil a new sculpture by metalsmith and jewelry maker Amy Green during the program. The event also includes guided hikes and an arts and crafts make-and-take for children.

Russell Company 8th Annual Earth Day Event
April 17 | 2522 Covington St, West Lafayette

The Russell Company will be providing Paper shredding, drug take back, and e-recyling services in celebration of Earth Day 2021.

Hamilton County Earth Day Volunteer Event
April 22 | Carmel, IN

Looking for a way to engage this Earth Day? Hamilton County is inviting volunteers for a native planting drive on April 22 at the Woodland Gardens of Central Park, Carmel. Visit their website for more information.
 
Indiana Dunes Trash Trekkers Earth Day Cleanup
April 22 | Multiple Locations

Those interested in signing up for the event should contact parkconnection@gmail.com or call 219-221-7098 to be assigned a cleanup location. Volunteers must register with the park’s volunteer office before Sunday, April 18.
 
Purdue Student Sustainability Council: Friday Night Lights 
April 23 | Purdue Campus

Join the Purdue Student Sustainability Council in helping save energy on campus. The student group is leading a volunteering drive to ensure lights and other electrical appliances are turned off in buildings across campus. Volunteers can sign up online at this link. They will receive an email by Friday at 4 PM giving them their building assignment and details about how to collect data. 
 
De-Trash the Wabash
April 24 | Multiple Locations

This year, the event goes contact-less. Help safely remove trash from the banks of the Wabash. Multiple contact-less supply pick-up points to ensure social distancing.

All ages welcome! Registration is required.
 
Earth Day Celebration
April 24 | Children's Museum of Indianapolis



The Children's Museum is joining organizations around the world in celebrating Earth Day with special hands-on activities to commemorate this important day.
  • Local community organizations will showcase the work they do to protect and care for the Earth with resources and activities
  • Teens from the Museum Apprentice Program will lead activities they created throughout the museum
  • Special programming in the STEMLab

Healthy Boiler Workshop: "Reduce and Reuse"

While recycling is critical to the maintenance of sustainability, reducing and reusing are equally important for personal and environmental health. Join the Center for Healthy Living for its upcoming virtual Healthy Boiler workshop, “Reduce and Reuse” on April 30. Presented by registered dietician Megan Schindler and registered nurse health coach Whitney Soto, the workshop will introduce students to the benefits of incorporating a reduce and reuse thinking in our lifestyle.

Earth Day Indiana Festival 
June 5 | Garfield Park, Indianapolis



Mark your calendars for the 2021 Earth Day Indiana Festival! Held this year on June 5, World Environment Day, at Garfield Park, the event celebrates our planet, educating the publics on all things surrounding environmental protection, conservation of natural resources and sustainable living. Festivities include educational activities, musical performances, 5K run/walk, as well as a number for food stalls! More info.
