Some animals are venomous and some animals are poisonous – do you know the difference? Venomous animals, like lionfish or West African Gaboon vipers, have spines or fangs that they use to introduce their toxin to something they perceive as a threat. On the other hand, poisonous animals need to be eaten or touched to have any effect – for example, a Colorado River toad releases toxins from its skin to discourage predators from eating it.
What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

| In the know |
Here's an insider tip for enjoying Magnificent Macaws presented by Central Indiana Honda Dealers from another perspective. For the 1:30pm and 4:30pm presentations, head to the Macaws exhibit in Forests 15 minutes before to chat with an interpreter and to see the Pit Crew flock take off headed for The Perch!
Then, move to the western end of the path through the Bicentennial Pavilion to get an awesome view of the flock returning to Forests at the end of the presentation. Have your cameras ready, because there's incredible beauty in these birds, especially in flight.
See you at the Zoo, shutterbugs!

| Double Secret contest |
Every month, we hide a little surprise in our eNews. In the June issue, we took a refresher course in what species of macaw you can see in the Magnificent Macaws bird presentation.
We think we might need to go take an eye test. Suddenly, we're seeing stripes and spots and colorful patterns! What's going on? They're all over the Zoo! In the eNews, we heard you should keep an eye open for some cute Zoo youngsters with patterned tails hanging out in the eNews this month. If you do find them, click through for instructions. If you're one of the first five members to email us with the double secret password/passphrase, you'll win a special Zoo prize pack!
Congratulations to last month's winners: Courtney P-B., Franklin; Melissa C., Bloomington; Angie S., Indianapolis; Cassie W., Terre Haute; Tracy S., Anderson, and our wild card winner, Lilly V.H., Indianapolis. |
