Attention, artists!
  Naturally Inspired Paint Out
Applications due by March 1

We're looking for artists! Each spring, the Zoo invites a group of 15 juried artists to make art on grounds during the Naturally Inspired Paint Out Day. This signature Zoo event is a great opportunity for an artist to showcase his or her talent in front of thousands of Zoo patrons while also supporting the Zoo's mission of animal conservation. Help grow the Giving Tree
When most of us think of our children on Christmas Day, we envision them running to the Christmas tree to see what Santa left. Unfortunately, not all children wake up at home on Dec. 25 to gifts under the Christmas tree. Some children wake up to the sights and sounds of a hospital, and Christmas just doesn't feel the same.

Through the Giving Tree program, every child in Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent receives a gift on Christmas Day. Gifts are collected during the holidays and handed out to children throughout the year for birthdays, end-of-treatment parties and as rewards or recognition for how well a child has handled a medical procedure.

You can help, and participating is simple! From Nov. 25 through Dec. 22, select a tag from the Giving Tree in the Zoo Gift Shop, purchase the item listed on the tag, and place the unwrapped donation in the box provided. It's easy!

Giving Tree items include:
  • Children's books
  • Crayons
  • Stuffed animals
  • Activity books & craft kits
For more information, call the St. Vincent Foundation at 317-338-7193.

I wonder ...
Whether terrestrial or aquatic, frogs have what it takes to survive freezing temperatures and live to hop another day. What's their secret? In some species, like the wood frog, a high concentration of glucose in their vital organs acts as an antifreeze. While the frog will be partially frozen and appear to be dead, its organs can begin to function again as soon as the frog thaws.

What animal fact are you wondering about? Keep those questions coming! Yours just might get answered in a future issue!

Do you have what it takes to be a Zoo Teen?
We are looking for responsible, reliable and enthusiastic students between the ages of 14-18! The Zoo Teen program provides teenagers from Central Indiana the opportunity to meet new people, learn job skills and gain a better understanding of how a world-class zoological facility functions. Spots are limited, and those selected are required to attend trainings in the spring. For more information, call the Volunteer Services office at 317-630-2041 or visit IndianapolisZoo.com.

Please note: Application packets must be received no later than Dec. 31, 2016. Applicants should be at least 14 years old as of that date.

Forcing bulbs for off-season bloom

Perhaps you have some spring-flowering bulbs that you just haven't managed to plant yet. Or maybe you are already dreaming of the sight and fragrance of flowers that you won't be seeing outside for months. There is a way you can still make use of those crocuses, hyacinths and narcissus (daffodils) and have blooms inside this winter and early spring through the forcing of bulbs. Read more ...
