A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fellow Grad Students,

Today marks a meaningful milestone. On this day in 1985, the Purdue Graduate Student Government held its very first meeting. Forty years later, PGSG has grown into a collective voice representing over 13,000 graduate students. We have become a space where we advocate for one another, support our daily needs, and build pathways into leadership across academia and industry. This growth did not happen on its own; it is the result of students who chose to show up, volunteer their time, share ideas, and push for better. At its core, PGSG exists to represent you. To every student who participates, offers feedback, or steps into service:
THANK YOU. You help shape where we are today and where we are headed next.

Strengthening Our Foundation
In the spirit of our 40th anniversary, we are focused on expanding the support systems that help our community thrive:

  • Expanded Mobility: We have released 200 Lyft vouchers today, doubling our usual offering so more of our peers can benefit. I am continuing to work with campus partners to increase this support in the coming weeks.
  • Nutrition and Wellbeing: We have partnered with Purdue Farms to offer a 25% discount on salad kits purchased between March 7 - May 9, for eligible graduate students. Click here to learn more about the program, and click this link to complete the PGSG sign up form by February 27th
  • Additionally, we have launched an initiative providing 40 food vouchers each month for use at campus food courts and the Purdue Memorial Union, starting August 2026.
  • Recognizing Excellence: We are proud to reintroduce the PGSG Excellence Awards, specifically designed to honor graduate students making an impact through research, networking, and community building.

Join us!
We want to mark this day with you in person. Join us this morning at Greyhouse Coffee to share a cup of coffee, work on your research, and celebrate how far we have come together.

Tonight, we will gather for Team Appreciation Night. While this event allows us to express our deep gratitude to our current members for their service, it is also a perfect opportunity for those of you looking to get involved and we would love to welcome you.
More details about Team  Night are provided in the sections below.

Our flagship event, the 40th Anniversary Reception, takes place this
Friday, February 20, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Purdue Graduate Student Center. This reception brings graduate students and university leadership together to reflect on what we have achieved through partnership and shared effort. If you have not yet RSVP’d, I encourage you to do so using the link or QR code below.

Forty years ago, our predecessors chose to organize and advocate for one another. Today, we carry that torch. I hope that forty years from now, the students who follow us will look back at this moment and see that we, too, strengthened the foundation. I hope they see that we met the challenges of our time with grace; that we stood up for one another; and that we kept the promise of this community alive.

Boiler Up,

Shalom Kpetsu
President,
Purdue Graduate Student Government 2025-2026
